On Thursday, the International Flight Transport Association (IATA) reported that global flight traffic increased 52.4 percent over a year earlier in March.

Revenue passenger kilometers, or RPKs, a measure of air traffic, were 12 percent lower in March 2019 than before the epidemic.

Willie Walsh, the director general of IATA, stated that “ticket sales for both domestic and international travel give every indication that strong growth will continue into the peak Northern Hemisphere summer travel season.”

International traffic increased 68.9% from the previous year, and RPKs surpassed March 2019 levels by 81.6%.

As China’s reopening gained traction, Walsh claimed that demand for Asia-Pacific carriers “near-tripled,” driving the increase in foreign travel.

With an increase of 158.9 percent year over year in March, Asia-Pacific maintained its lead over other regions in yearly growth.

Domestic aviation traffic increased 34.1 percent over the previous year, hitting 98.9 percent of March 2019 levels after hovering around pre-pandemic levels for months.

Separate IATA data revealed a 7.7% yearly decline in the global demand for aviation freight as measured in cargo ton-kilometers.

The IATA said that March performance was down 8.1% from pre-Covid levels, sliding back into the red.

Regarding cargo ton-kilometers available, capacity increased by 9.9% from March of last year.
