On its third and final reading, the House of Representatives approved a bill offering additional benefits to Filipino centenarians in recognition of and support for them Monday.

House Bill (HB) No. 7535, which aims to grant special recognition to centenarians who reach the age of 101 and to provide cash gifts to nonagenarians and octogenarians without them having to wait until they reach 100 years old, was adopted by the House with a resounding 257 votes.

The law stipulates that all Filipinos who turn 100, whether in the country or abroad, will be recognized with a letter of congratulations from the president and a “centenarian gift” of PHP100,000.

HB 7535 said that “every Filipino centenarian who reaches the age of 101 years shall each receive a cash gift of PHP1,000,000 on their birthday.”

Additionally, every Filipino who turns 80, 85, 90, or 95 would get a letter of congratulations from the President “and a cash gift of PHP25,000 each.”

The law requires the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) to carry out the Act’s requirements.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez remarked, “With this law, the House of Representatives would want to thank our people for their years of service to the country and for their self-discipline in ensuring that they live a long, healthy, and fruitful life.

Naturally, we also want our nonagenarians and octogenarians to take advantage of this benefit while they can, so we also presented a financial gift for them, he continued.
