The Department of Health (DOH) reported Tuesday that the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections nationally has climbed to 1,400 cases.

From May 1 to 7, the agency reported 1,352 daily illnesses, up from 637 between April 24 and April 30.

Most cases—roughly 96%—are mild, asymptomatic, or moderate. We only have a small fraction of people with severe and critical illnesses, about 4%, according to DOH officer-in-charge Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire in a media event.

She pointed out that the utilization of the healthcare system is still low-risk, with only 21% of hospital wards for Covid-19 and only 16% of intensive care unit wards being occupied.

She claimed that the rise in cases was brought on by the population’s recent mobility, particularly during long weekends and religious activities.

She explained that there has only been one detected case of the Arcturus variant. “We don’t have any new genome sequencing results, so as of right now, there has only been one detected case of the Arcturus variant,” she stated.

According to earlier DOH statements, the new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, commonly known as the Arcturus, is more transmissible but provides a modest danger to sick people.

The DOH stated last month that “overall risk assessment is low” after discovering the first case of Arcturus, an asymptomatic Iloilo patient who had fully recovered.

The DOH claimed, citing the WHO, that the new subvariant did not worsen the condition in nations where it has been circulating.

According to the most recent DOH statistics, as of March 19, 78,443,972 people—or 100.4%—of the country’s target population (78,100,578) have received the Covid-19 vaccine, including 82.16 percent of 8,721,357 seniors.

In the meantime, 23,811,248 people have received booster doses.
