TikTok is prohibited on government phones in Austria.
The social networking app TikTok has been prohibited on official phones in Austria, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The decision was made, according to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, in accordance with the advice of an expert group that was established under the ministry in February.
TikTok is a Chinese-owned app, which raises several worries about information and data security. Despite the fact that public employees can use it on their personal devices, Karner indicated that this is not permitted on federally-issued mobile devices.
For similar reasons, the state of Upper Austria has joined the federal government in outlawing the use of TikTok on company-issued mobile devices by its employees.
The Chinese social media site is already prohibited on official devices used by public personnel in many European and American countries.
