According to a well-known Greek climate scientist, climate change is a worldwide issue that poses a major threat to people all over the world, especially the poor, and that must be addressed through regional and international collaboration and processes.

Kostas Lagouvardos, research director at the National Observatory of Athens, told Anadolu in an exclusive interview that living will become increasingly difficult for the poor while wealthier people can undoubtedly shield themselves from climate change and its repercussions, such as high heat.

Simply put, individuals who can afford it can switch on their air conditioners without worrying about the electricity bill when there is an intense heatwave. The wealthy would also be able to eat anything they wanted even if a drought increases food prices, he added.

Additionally, Lagouvardos said that urban regions with dense population densities are more at risk from climate change due to their increased exposure to the dangers of high heat and flooding than rural places.

The fastest-warming continent is Europe.

Geographically speaking, he claimed that Europe is where one can see the effects of climate change the most.

“Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union show that Europe has warmed up the fastest of any region. Over the past 30 years, temperatures across Europe have risen by a factor of more than double the global average, according to Lagouvardos.

Although warming is a phenomenon that affects the entire continent, he highlighted that the early-spring droughts and wildfires that resulted from a combination of above-average temperatures and a lack of rain were particularly noticeable in Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

Lagouvardos claims that despite a warming trend that affected the entire continent, areas of Turkey and Greece saw below-average temperatures.

In particular, he noted that temperatures on the Greek island of Crete and in central Anatolia in Turkey continued to be below average, which is unusual for Europe.

He claimed that there is insufficient scientific evidence to back up assertions made by some experts that the western parts of Turkey and Greece may see unusually hot weather this summer with temperatures reaching 50 Celcius.

However, Lagouvardos advised that “we should be prepared for the worst-case scenario.”

“What needs to be done globally is reducing carbon emission, the biggest cause of climate change,” he added, urging cooperation between nations and the establishment of systems to deal with the problem. In order to do this, the switch to green energy needs to be sped up even further. The development of instruments to aid in this transformation and uphold universal laws is also crucial.

He claimed that Turkey and Greece might work together to address climate change as part of regional initiatives.

“I am unable to predict the projects and policies that politicians will come up with, but as a scientist, I would like to work closely with my Turkish colleagues. We can, among other things, co-develop initiatives and exchange pertinent data and survey results. The problem of climate change gives us, as neighbors, a great chance to cooperate, said Lagouvardos.
