The goal of the growing military interactions between the Philippine and US militaries is to keep the Indo-Pacific region free.

This pledge was made at a meeting on Wednesday at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City between US Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Gen. Andres Centino.

Col. Jorry Baclor, head of the AFP public affairs office, said in a statement late on Wednesday that “the two affirmed that the increase in engagements is geared towards preventing conflict, advancing the rules-based international order, and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

According to him, Centino and McConville also spoke on the strengthening bilateral ties between the US and the Philippines, which were underlined by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s recent trip to the country.

The US general was quoted as stating, “I was very excited about his recent visit to Washington D.C. as it sets the stage for a bigger and stronger relationship.”

The high-level engagements and training exercises, McConville continued, are positive signs of the growing collaboration. “For a very long time, we have been friends and allies, and I believe it is crucial that we continue to be so. In fact, the American military officer continued, “I actually think it’s preferable that we develop into better friends, partners, and allies in the future.

Centino, meanwhile, expressed optimism in the US-Philippines relationship and expressed support for recent changes, particularly those that enhance capabilities and interoperability.

“We appreciate your dedication and your help. We value your visit as it significantly strengthens our partnership and fosters collaboration, he remarked.
