84% of Oriental Mindoro’s coastline was cleaned after an oil spill

As of May 10, the Malacaang declared that 62.95 km, or almost 84 percent, of the 74.71 km of shoreline in Oriental Mindoro province impacted by the oil spill had been cleaned up.

According to a statement issued by Presidential Communications Office Secretary Cheloy Garafil, Carlito Galvez Jr., head of the Department of National Defense, informed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the cleanup update.

Garafil noted that the information was initially presented during the May 11 meeting with the National Task Force and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD). “In an update to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Galvez reported that of the 74.71 kilometers of affected coastline, 62.95 kilometers, or 84.26 percent, has been cleaned as of May 10, 2023,” he said.

“Galvez said the OCD recorded 6,801 liters of oil waste and 300,603.60 liters of oil-contaminated waste collected through the combined efforts of various agencies and organizations,” the author continued.

According to the OCD report, a siphoning vessel from Singapore is projected to arrive in the nation by the end of the month, and operations to remove the anticipated month’s worth of oil are scheduled to start in the first week of June.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from Japan named the Shin Nichi Maru was sent to aid with the cleanup after it landed at the port of Calapan in Oriental Mindoro in March.

Fishing techniques

Garafil stated that the municipal waters of Clusters 4 and 5 are currently “within acceptable standards for fishing activities,” citing the BFAR’s 15th technical report.

Municipalities in Cluster 4 include those in Bongabong, Roxas, Mansalay, and Bulalacao, while those in Cluster 5 are those in San Teodoro, Baco, and Puerto Galera.

Clusters 1, 2, and 3’s waters are still “not safe for fishing,” according to Garafil.

The towns of Naujan, Pola, Pinamalayan, Gloria, and Bansud, which are close to the submerged ship, are included in Clusters 1, 2, and 3.

Marcos instructed the Department of Interior and Local Government to work with local officials to select alternate fishing grounds during his visit to Oriental Mindoro last month.

According to Garafil, Galvez informed the President that the water test findings and related advisory are anticipated to be made public by BFAR no later than May 15.

While the Department of Tourism and P&I Correspondent Aqueous, Inc. figured out how many insurance claimants fell under the tourism industry, she added that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau would plot water quality test sites on a map for visualization.

Recovery support

According to Galvez, the Marcos administration has given 96,256 affected residents early recovery help at PHP516,873,483.

Additionally, he stated that the impacted population would be provided with alternate means of subsistence by the National Economic and Development Authority, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Labor and Employment.

When the M/T Princess Empress ran aground off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, on February 28 owing to engine issues, it was estimated to be carrying roughly 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil. The next day, it sank.

Other nations’ coast guards and experts also volunteered to help limit the oil spill.
