NegOcc is still ASF-free, but 2K pigs die from hog cholera.

ASF has not yet been detected in Negros Occidental, but more than 2,000 pigs have perished there from hog cholera since last month.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said he spoke with the regional chief executives and representatives of the involved agencies during an emergency meeting on Tuesday to review the province’s animal biosecurity measures and the current hog disease issue.

“It has been proven that we are still free of ASF today. Even though they asked for it, we sent our samples to the local laboratory. He told reporters outside the meeting at the Negros Residences, “After 18 samples, it’s still negative for ASF.

The 3rd District in the north and the 4th District in the south, particularly San Enrique town, are most severely affected by hog cholera.

“It’s a loss on the side of the raisers, especially since the hog cholera that caused the mortality should have been avoided. There is a vaccine for it, according to Lacson. “I’m not sure what percentage it (2,000 heads) represents. That isn’t, in my opinion, our volume right now. There are a lot, a lot more heads here.

The implementation of the inter-local government unit (LGU) animal movement rule was also discussed during the conference.

“We also discussed the potential for (ASF) to occur in Negros Occidental during our discussion. What should we do first? I’ll issue an executive order establishing an incident management team focusing on swine industry diseases, said Lacson.

He mentioned that it has been advised that hog repopulation should stop for three months and that pigs should only be sold within the source LGU, should ASF strike the province.

Negros Occidental is one of the top hog-producing regions in the nation, with a swine industry worth PHP6 billion.
