SRA encourages farmers to join block farming and guarantees assistance and training

On Thursday, the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) asked farmers to organize into cooperatives to pursue block farming for the sugar sector.

Speaking about block farming on 30 to 50 hectares, SRA Acting Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona claimed in an interview with Radyo Pilipinas that this method would assist local farmers in raising their yield by 5 to 10 tons per hectare.

“To increase efficiency, we must group the recipients into farms, each with a minimum of 30 hectaresโ€ฆ A tractor uses 90โ€“95 horsepower efficiently. Because of this, we can give them a tractor if their group is that large. Because they would be able to organize the planting and harvesting into one farm, we can also assist them technologically, Azcona stated in a combination of English and Filipino.

To expand our reach and speed up the process, we also support the formation of new cooperatives. We can upgrade the machinery because larger machinery is more effective and quicker in sugarcane farming.

90 percent of the 390,000 hectares of sugar plantations in the nation, he pointed out, are owned by farmers who have between one and two hectares of land.

As a result, “pagbigay mo ng traktora at hindi sila organized, pag-aagawan nila ‘yun,” because there is no tractor small enough for one to two hectares. “Kailan ‘yung schedule ng pag-araro?”Regarding a block farm, everyone works together mismo and makes plans. then organize the manufacturing cycle so that if you give farmers a tractor but are not organized, they will seize it. When will the plowing schedule be? But if their block farm is substantial, they will collectively plot. The production cycle will then be set up),” he stated.

The SRA would complete the real production data by the end of the month, according to Azcona.

He added that we are simply waiting for the actual production this May to submit to the President the volume that has to be imported. “Itong month of May na lang na actual production na lang ‘yung hinihintay natin po ma-present natin sa pangulo ‘yung actual volume na kailangan i-import.”

“The amount of materials available to us is approximately 150,000 (metric tons) at this time. Mayroon, there will be 50,000 MT worth of goods. The 100,000 MT will also act as a one-month buffer for us, as we require 150,000 MT. A 50,000 MT shortage exists. And for a month or a bit longer, the 100,000 MT will act as a buffer stock),” he continued.

According to Azcona, importers, general consumers, and institutional buyers would all have access to this stock.

The DA remarked on Wednesday that the 150,000 MT of importation will assist in bringing down sugar costs.

Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban stated in an interview that the cost per kilogram will range from PHP80 to PHP90.

In Metro Manila, the cost of refined sugar per kilogram currently ranges from PHP86 to PHP110.
