The Batangas Eyes app tracks livestock movement.

In a joint effort with Batangas State University (BSU), the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) unveiled plans to improve its capacity for tracking the movement of cattle within and outside the province.

The Batangas Animal Movement Reporting Approach to Control Diseases (BARACO) proposal, according to Krisel Ragas, Veterinarian IV at OPV, will standardize the procedure for obtaining licenses to transport livestock and poultry out of the province’s cities and municipalities, she told the Philippine News Agency in an interview on Monday.

“It will be formally established by BARACO using just one step. Transparency will also be present because cities and municipalities can see what we can see in the province, according to Ragas.

The OPV presented the BARACO during the meeting of livestock haulers held last week, reminding attendees that their line of work involves transporting both imported and exported animals and other goods.

“One of the main topics we cover in this hauler’s forum is animal welfare, which is significant while transporting animals. According to Ragas, even if our animals are raised for human consumption, we must ensure that animal welfare laws are followed.

The processing of veterinary health certificates will be made easier by requiring farmers to register with BARACO, and haulers will also be enrolled so that it would be simpler for them to secure shipping permits, she continued.

More than 100 haulers from Calabarzon, the National Capital Region, and Northern Luzon, who import goods from the province, attended the gathering.

We cherish that industry because the province of Batangas is one of the main suppliers of livestock and poultry for Calabarzon and Metro Manila, according to Ragas. We appreciate the stakeholders’ active participation in our programs, particularly those aimed at disease prevention.

Additionally, according to Ragas, the idea will benefit the province’s livestock business in fighting diseases like African swine fever (ASF) and avian influenza (AI).

“When ASF first appeared in 2020, we observed truckers breaking the law frequently, so we looked into why this was happening. Their ignorance is typically an issue. As a result, one of BARACO’s objectives is to make it easier for stakeholders to access information.
