Last July 2021, according to Globe Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the world is now in the early stages of a third wave.

Ghebreyesus stated in his opening comments at the 8th meeting of the IHR Emergency Committee on Covid-19 that instances of coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) have been rising worldwide in the last week.

Furthermore, following a 10-week decrease, “deaths are rising again,” he added.

“The Delta variation is one of the major drivers of the present rise in transmission,” he said, “driven by increasing social mixing and mobility, as well as the uneven implementation of established public health and social interventions.”

Ghebreyesus was quoted as saying “The Delta variation is already found in more than 111 countries and the WHO predicts that “if it isn’t already, it will soon be the dominant Covid-19 strain circulating globally.”

“A startling discrepancy in the worldwide distribution of vaccinations,” the WHO chief said.

Meanwhile, the majority of the world’s population is “at the mercy of the virus” due to a shortage of vaccinations, according to Ghebreyesus, who noted that “many countries still have not got any immunizations, and most have not received enough.”

“COVAX may work, but the scale is still too tiny, with just a little more than 100 million doses shipped,” he added.
