The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is assisting in the expansion of the Food Innovation Center in Northern Mindanao
The Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center (NM-FIC) of the University of Science and Technology of the Southern Philippines (USTP) main campus in Cagayan de Oro City will soon have a new facility.
On September 3, 2021 afternoon, Misamis Oriental Science and Technology Director Junelyn Louvena Ruiz informed the Philippine News Agency that the extra facility and equipment will be used for supplementary food production and the extension of the food laboratory testing.
She said that the new structure should be completed by August 2022.
She said that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) supplied significant equipment as well as technical advice and services to help create food items. It has also helped with the creation of packages and brochures.
“The NM-FIC is the first of its kind in Northern Mindanao, offering services like as new product creation, product enhancement, and equipment rentals,” she said.
According to Ruiz, the DOST has also been helping in the processing of the FDA license to operate.
“All food processors are welcome to join the FIC, but it is not free. The cost mostly covers equipment leasing, product development, and utility and raw material use. It’s possible that the consultation would be free “she said
Since the creation of the NM-FIC in 2015, the DOST-X claims that approximately 100 items have been created and 1000 customers have been serviced.
The new facility is intended to assist more micro, small, and medium businesses.
