SoKor fines Google $177 million for suspected market dominance abuse.

According to local media, South Korea’s antitrust authority has fined Google USD177 million for allegedly abusing its market dominance in the mobile operating system and app industries.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) has been investigating Google since 2016 on claims that it prevented local smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung Electronics Co., from adopting alternative operating systems.

According to the commission, Google hindered market competition by forcing smartphone manufacturers to sign an “anti-fragmentation agreement (AFA)” when they sign crucial contracts with the company over app store licensing and early access to the operating system.

Device manufacturers are not allowed to install customized versions of Android OS, known as “Android forks,” on their devices under the AFA agreement. They are also not permitted to create their own Android forks, according to Yonhap.

Google has also been forced to stop pushing Android device makers to sign the AFA agreement, according to the regulator.

“We anticipate that the new regulations will assist in reviving competition in the mobile OS and app industries. This is also anticipated to aid the introduction of new products and services in the smart device industry “According to a KFTC statement, which was quoted by the news agency.

In response to the judgment, Google said that it intends to challenge the decision of the regulator.

Google was fined 296 million Turkish liras (USD36.6 million) by Turkish authorities in April for breaking the country’s competition legislation.

Google was also fined USD1.69 billion by the European Commission in 2019 for violating EU antitrust laws on internet advertising.
