The coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, is safe and efficacious against symptomatic Covid-19 in children aged 5 to 11.

The information was released in a document published on October 23 ahead of a meeting of FDA advisers slated for October 26.

Pfizer and BioNTech have submitted an emergency use authorization (EUA) request to the FDA for a two-dose regimen of their 10-microgram dosage for children aged 5 to 11.

The two dosages would be separated by three weeks.

The findings suggest that the two-dose primary series of the vaccine, given to children aged 5 to less than 12 years, provides a high level of protection against Covid-19 during a time when the Delta variant of concern is prevalent in the United States.

On October 26, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee will meet to discuss whether the vaccine should be approved for children.

It would be the first Covid-19 vaccine for younger children if it were approved.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is presently approved for persons aged 16 and up, with a European Union approval for children aged 12 to 15.
