From January to November 2021, 675K OFWs were deployed: POEA

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) announced on Wednesday that more than 670,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were deployed abroad from January to November of last year.

“Total deployment is 675,567 from January to November 2021. In an advisory, POEA administrator Bernard Olalia stated that “December figures are not included.”

The number is larger than the 560,300 OFWs deployed on land and water in 2020.

Olalia also stated that the deployment of health-care personnel overseas last year, mainly to Israel and the United Kingdom, was unaffected (UK).

“Our caregiver deployment was not hampered because we had deployed our caregivers as early as December last year.” The Israeli government has continued to welcome our workers, particularly those in the health care field, who are in high demand in the destination country. Our nurses, of course, are in the United Kingdom. Health-care employees are “constantly being accepted by international companies,” he stated in a virtual conference, “particularly (since) they are needed during this period of a pandemic.”

Due to the rise in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections in the Philippines, he observed that some countries have introduced new guidelines.

“The growth of Covid-19 as a result of the Omicron has had a lot of ramifications in the deployment as well.” There are certain countries that have tightened their regulations. A new convention has been established by several governments. There is a country where I recall that immunization, Covid-19 vaccinations, are required before receiving the worker. They already have new processes in place to prevent the Omicron strain from spreading,” Olalia explained.

He did not, however, name these countries.

Olalia expressed optimism that conventional OFW marketplaces will open this year.

“I expect the pandemic will ease and return to our prior deployment levels two years after it began,” he said.
