Three Luzon dams’ water levels are expected to drop further: PAGASA

The water level of three major dams in Luzon is expected to continue to fall in January, highlighting the necessity to manage and preserve water in order to avoid a water deficit before the rainy season begins.

According to the latest available assessment from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, the water levels in the Angat, Pantabangan, and Magat dams were estimated to be around 191 meters, 203.50 meters, and 174 meters, respectively, at the end of the month (PAGASA).

PAGASA data also showed that these levels are lower than the dams’ comparable 6 a.m. levels of 201.84 meters, 205.67 meters, and 185.31 meters on Saturday.

Rainfall expected in the basins where the dams are located this January may not be enough to significantly raise water levels in these facilities, according to PAGASA hydrologist Adele Duran.

“It’s unlikely that there will be enough rain to actually boost the water level,” she remarked.

Duran also did not rule out the prospect of a water deficit at Angat Dam if the reservoir does not receive enough rain and the water level drops by 0.2 to 0.3 meters in the next four months.

She also mentioned that water shortages could occur in the Pantabangan and Magat dams.

The problem, according to Duran, is to manage and store the dams’ water so that it may be used for months before the rainy season begins in the middle of the year.

The Angat, Pantabangan, and Magat basins are expected to get almost 96 mm, 91 mm, and 49 mm of rainfall, respectively, in January, according to PAGASA.

However, according to PAGASA, the expected rainfall is less than half of what the watersheds require for the three dams’ water levels to rise to their regular high levels.

Localized thunderstorms and the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” may send rains to the three dams, according to Duran.

She noted, however, that the rains would not significantly raise the water levels in the dams.
