The United States has sent P1 billion in emergency help to the ‘Odette’-affected districts.

The US government has so far donated PHP1 billion in humanitarian aid to communities devastated by Typhoon Odette last month through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The funds came from USAID’s food assistance, water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives.

The Department of Social Welfare supplied 129,400 family food packets to Caraga, Central Visayas, Mimaropa, and Western Visayas, as well as other parts of Luzon, via 113 transport trucks and four mobile operations vehicles.

In Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, the international organization also set up 12 mobile storage units and operated one generator in collaboration with the World Food Program to create an emergency logistics hub.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) also increased camp management support for the victims.

It has already distributed 1,800 shelter-grade tarpaulins to refugees in Southern Leyte, 1,000 in the Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte, and 2,000 more in other typhoon-ravaged areas.

The US government provided an additional PHP950 million (USD19 million) in humanitarian supplies on Thursday.

The increased assistance, according to Heather Variava, Chargรฉ d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in the Philippines, will help distribute food and hygiene supplies as well as give life-saving support.

“We are committed to our longtime friend, partner, and ally in assisting communities affected by the typhoon,” Variava added.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had already allocated PHP50 million (USD1 million) to support emergency logistics efforts, ensuring that aid reaches hard-to-reach locations.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) gave PHP10 million (USD200,000) for food, water, and hygiene supplies just days after the typhoon on December 16 and 17, 2021.

It also assisted communities in restoring water supplies and sanitation facilities, as well as promoting cleanliness through a variety of activities.

Variava said she will also assess continuing US humanitarian efforts in “Odette”-affected villages.

The US government has pledged to continue assisting the Philippines in the aftermath of natural disasters and disaster recovery operations.
