PAL passengers are detained at NAIA 2 due to canceled flights.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) passengers were stranded at Terminal 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Monday as a result of the cancellation of at least 22 domestic and two international flights.

“Our airport staff set up a tent for stranded travelers to remain in while they wait in line at the PAL ticketing office in NAIA. Water and snacks were provided by Airport Services “Cielo Villaluna, a PAL representative, told reporters.

Many of PAL’s cabin crew members called in sick, forcing the airline to cancel a number of domestic and international flights, Villaluna said.

PAL had previously issued a warning about flight cancellations from January 9 to 16. According to Villaluna, passengers on those flights were advised by email.

“The folks in the tent are passengers who had their flights canceled only today, a few hours before departure, due to crew unavailability,” she explained.

On Monday, the following flights were canceled:

PR 2519/2520 Manila-Cagayan de Oro-Manila
PR 2861/2862 Manila-Cebu-Manila
PR 2965/2966 Manila-Busuanga (Coron)-Manila
PR 2981/2982 and PR 2985/2986 Manila-Tacloban-Manila
PR 2037/2038 Manila-Caticlan-Manila
PR 2143/2144 Manila-Iloilo-Manila
PR 2205/2206 Manila-Roxas-Manila
PR 2783/2784 Manila-Pagadian-Manila
PR 2959/2960 Manila-Cotabato-Manila
PR 2938/2939 Manila-Butuan-Manila
PR 2557/2558 Manila-Dipolog-Manila
PR 422/421 Manila-Tokyo Haneda-Manila

PAL said in a statement on Sunday night that it is having difficulty maintaining operations due to an increase in the number of front-line and support workers who are absent due to isolation needs.

“We are taking the precaution of canceling a few of PAL flights,” it wrote, “while our PAL personnel does everything possible to maintain as many other flights as possible, process all passenger requests, and relieve the longer call wait times and ticket office lineups.”

Affected travelers can exchange their tickets for travel credits equal to the unused base fee or get a refund minus the ticketing service charge.

Within 60 days of the original travel schedule, they can also rebook or reroute their ticket to another trip.
