The Covid-19 therapy medicine Bexovid, the first generic equivalent of Pfizer’s Paxlovid, has been given compassionate special permission (CSP) by the Food and Drug Administration.

Individuals aged 12 and above who have mild to moderate symptoms of Covid-19 may benefit from Bexovid.

When given within three to five days of the onset of symptoms, it can reduce the chance of hospitalization and death by 88 to 89 percent.

“So, because it’s generic, it’s inaasahan na mas mura po ang cost of therapy versus Paxlovid, at ito po ay ibinigay itong CSP sa DOH,” FDA officer-in-charge Dr. Oscar Gutierrez said in his Monday briefing to President Rodrigo Duterte.

He went on to say that after Biocare Lifescience Inc., a Philippine-based pharmaceutical distributor, processes the supplies, the DOH will be able to make the drug accessible and available to government hospitals.

Paxlovid was approved for usage in the United States first.

Pfizer is expected to file for an emergency use authorization for Paxlovid in the last week of this month, according to Gutierrez.
