According to World Health Organization national representative Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, the Omicron version of the coronavirus may soon replace Delta as the prevalent variation in the Philippines.

Because there are “quite a few” sequencing findings from other regions, Abeyasinghe believes it will be difficult to identify which variant is dominant soon.

“We believe that, as in several other nations, Omicron will soon supersede Delta variation as the major version,” Abeyasinghe said in a televised public briefing.

“The most recent batch of samples came primarily from the NCR (National Capital Region) and from returning overseas Filipinos who tested positive, so it’s not surprising that the Delta variation is currently being supplanted by the Omicron variant among ROFs and in the NCR,” Abeyasinghe explained.

Dr. Cynthia Saloma, the director of the Philippine Genome Center, previously stated that many Delta variant cases were still found in the December sequencing run.

Abeyasinghe went on to say that it’s difficult to say if the country is at the peak of a case spike or whether more cases are on the way.

“We’ve noticed that the incubation period in Omicron is shorter than in Delta and other types. As a result, things move considerably faster and evolve much faster,” he explained.

The Department of Health reported 32,246 new coronavirus infections as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 3,058,634 with 208,164 active cases.

According to Abeyasinghe, when the virus spreads to other parts of the country, such as Central Visayas, Region 4-A (Calabarzon), and Region 5, the number of cases would continue to rise.

“Even in Visayas and Mindanao,” says the narrator. So, while this is unavoidable, we must use caution in judging and drawing inferences,” he warned.

He urged people to keep the virus from spreading by adhering to the basic public health requirements.
