The spirit of volunteerism is energizing relief operations for ‘Odette’ victims.

Various donations and volunteer offers continue to pour into the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), bolstering the government’s relief efforts for the victims of Typhoon Odette.

The DSWD said on Wednesday that its own employees are staffing the repacking areas only to get the job done quickly.

Malu Catolin, a member of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) team, finds fulfillment in putting the program’s fundamental values into practice by repacking family food packets for families displaced by “Odette.”

“I was able to support individuals affected by the typhoon in an indirect way,” Malu, a financial analyst at the DSWD Field Office (FO) in Region 6 (Western Visayas), said in a DSWD post.

Malu, who has worked at the DSWD FO-Western Visayas for over a decade, is no stranger to staff mobilization in the event of a crisis or typhoon.

“Through its Field Office (FO) 7, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) collaborated with public and private groups in Central Visayas to offer donations and humanitarian assistance to families affected by Typhoon Odette,” the agency said.

Some DSWD FO 7 workers and volunteers aided in the repacking of Family Food Packs (FFPs) and other relief products, while others assisted in the releasing, loading, and escorting of relief items to various transportation routes.

The Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, and Philippine Marines all used their vessels and marine patrol boats to reach victims on the island barangays, as did the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Through the Cebu Contractors Association, private sector partners Maayo Shipping, Matiao Trucking, and Cebu Oversea Hardware Co., Inc. assisted in the distribution of relief assistance using their wing vans for point-to-point delivery and hauling services of raw materials are also contributing significantly.

According to the most recent assessment, the DSWD has delivered more than PHP287 million in disaster aid to typhoon victims. The DSWD FO-Central Visayas supplied more than PHP94 million worth of food and non-food supplies to towns devastated by the hurricane.

As mandated in Republic Act (RA) 10121 or the Philippines Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, the DSWD would continue to provide the necessary resources to help impacted local government entities, which are the first responders in disasters and calamities.
