Eastern Visayas had the highest positivity rate of new Covid-19 cases on Monday, at 57 percent, as new cases have been increasing since last week, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

According to DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago, 346 of the 610 samples evaluated by two laboratories in the region were positive for Covid-19, a positivity rate of 57 percent, the highest since the pandemic broke out in early 2020.

“This means that 57 of every 100 samples tested for Covid-19 are positive. Since we cater to all requests for testing, such as those with symptoms, close connections, and those admitted to hospitals due to other illnesses, the number of cases has been increasing,” Malibago said in a statement given to the Philippine News Agency on Monday.

The rate of optimism has risen in recent days, rising from 44% on January 12 to 46% on January 13, 47 percent on January 14, 50 percent on January 15, and 56 percent on January 16.

The number of cases reported to the health department has risen from 318 on January 12 to 449 on January 13, 450 on January 14, 543 on January 15, and 536 on January 16.

After more than two months of case decline, the region finally registered over 100 cases on January 8, according to Malibago.

Despite an increase in cases, the DOH is still waiting for confirmation from the Philippine Genome Center in Manila to determine if the Omicron strain of the coronavirus is to blame.

Since early January, the Department of Health has sent over 100 samples to be sequenced in order to discover the presence of potentially harmful variations.

Eastern Visayas had 54,767 confirmed Covid-19 cases as of Jan. 17, 2022, with 51,259 recoveries and 631 deaths. This takes the overall number of active cases to 2,876 (or 5.25 percent).
