In the event of a surge, a new Manila hospital will place patients in quarantine.

The city administration of Manila is intending to transform a portion of the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila into a quarantine facility to further prepare for a likely rise in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases.

In an interview on Monday, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso suggested that the emergency department of the 10-story hospital, which is currently under construction, may be used for Covid-19 patients.

In the worst-case scenario, the city’s six district hospitals, 12 quarantine facilities, and the Manila Covid-19 Field Hospital’s Covid-19 beds are depleted.

“It’s the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila’s emergency room, which has a 50-bed capacity.” Tuloy pa rin ang construction sa ibang parte ng bagong ospital, pero may mga places na kami na pwedeng gamitin (This is the Bagong Ospital ng Maynila’s 50-bed capacity emergency department.) The work in other parts of the hospital is still going on, but we already have spaces that can be used),” Domagoso said at the unveiling of the drive-through facility for public utility vehicle drivers’ booster shots, which aired online.

Only 105 Covid-19 beds, or 30% of the 344-bed capacity of the Manila Covid-19 Field Hospital, were occupied as of Monday.

The occupancy rate reached as high as 95% last week.

The municipal government opened a field hospital on December 31 for overseas Filipino workers (OFW) and returning overseas Filipinos (ROF) who tested positive for Covid-19 but had mild symptoms upon arrival.

OFWs and ROFs might seek to be transported to the field hospital through the Bureau of Quarantine.

The city’s free use of the field hospital, according to Domagoso, is a means of rewarding OFWs who have never stopped giving financial aid since the pandemic began in 2020.

“We’re doing OK in terms of capacity so far, but we’re not doing so well in terms of infection, kasi ‘yung infection grabe pa rin (because the number of infections is still high),” he remarked.

After documenting 120 new infections, Manila now has 3,413 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday lunchtime.
