Duterte wants a larger statue of Lapulapu, a Filipino hero.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte wants a “larger and higher” statue of Lapulapu, the first Filipino hero, than the one in Cebu honoring Portuguese explorer and colonizer Ferdinand Magellan.

“Let me be clear: I am not disparaging Magellan because ‘yung monument niya niya niya niya niya niya niya niya niya niya n (with his statue). I don’t wish to upset Cebuanos’ sensibilities. I’m just a citizen of this country who wants to share my thoughts “In a prerecorded Talk to the People broadcast Tuesday morning, Duterte stated.

Duterte recalls campaigning in Cebu during his presidential campaign.

“When I visited Cebu, I saw a statue of Magellan and Lapulapu. The statue of Magellan dwarfs that of Lapulapu “he stated “But it makes me uncomfortable to claim that Lapulapu’s statue is smaller than Magellan’s. I don’t mean any disrespect to Magellan.”

Lapulapu’s statue, according to Duterte, shall always be larger than Magellan’s.

“I’m not a portable person. What I observe does not appeal to me. (I am not really comfortable.) What I observe does not appeal to me. Let’s get it done), “According to Duterte.

Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles were directed by Duterte to work with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines to begin construction of a “larger and higher” statue for Lapulapu.

“Maski ko hindi [matapos] maupisahan lang ang gusto ko (I want it to even start). We can set aside particular sums for the goal of elevating our national hero’s [status], for example, “Nograles was informed by Duterte.

“My hero is Lapulapu, not Magellan,” he remarked, “though I admire Magellan.”

Duterte stated that voicing his views as a Filipino and wishing to create a larger statue of Lapulapu will hurt his fellow Cebuano.

“I do not want na ‘yung ating (that our) national hero number one who fought the invaders, Magellan, whose statue now stands higher than the statue of Lapulapu, as a matter of principle. The problem is that I want Lapulapu [statue] to be larger and taller than Magellan “he stated

In the famous Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu, the legendary monarch of Mactan Island, fought Spanish forces and killed Magellan.

Duterte signed Executive Order No. 152 in December of last year, changing the spelling of the first Filipino hero’s name from “Lapu-Lapu” to “Lapulapu.”
