‘In Tonga, a volcanic eruption poisoned the whole water supply.’

The whole water supply in Tonga has been poisoned by an undersea volcanic eruption, according to the Chinese envoy of the island nation.

“Tonga’s whole water supply has been poisoned, and residents are unable to obtain safe drinking water. Crops in the country have also been destroyed “China’s ambassador to Tonga, Cao Xiaolin, told Chinese media.

Since early Friday morning, the volcano, which is 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku’alofa on the main Tongatapu island, has been spewing ash, steam, and gas.

It wreaked havoc on the island’s communication systems.

Tonga’s administration announced on Tuesday that the country had been hit by an “extraordinary calamity.”

Tonga is the third-largest archipelago nation in the South Pacific, with more than 170 islands, many of which are deserted but covered with tropical rainforest.

The calamity struck most of Tonga’s main island’s west side, destroying homes and forcing residents to evacuate to safer areas.

According to a story in the Chinese daily Global Times on Wednesday, “the devastation was severe in the third-largest archipelago, which is closer to the volcano eruption, where entire residences were wrecked by the tsunami,” Cao said.

At least three people were reported dead in the disaster β€” one British national and two Tongan nationalities – but the precise number of victims is yet unknown.

“The property damage is significant. Volcanic ash is still present in the atmosphere, posing a threat to people’s respiratory systems. The people have been warned to stay indoors and travel with masks “Cao said.

Many individuals are still missing, according to the UN humanitarian coordination office in Geneva, while over 100 dwellings have been damaged and 50 have been completely destroyed.

“Once planes are able to fly into the region, China will transfer a batch of emergency supplies to Tonga as soon as possible,” China’s Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday.

Australia and New Zealand despatched two planes to examine the damage on Monday.

Tonga will also get a one-million-dollar aid package from Japan as a result of the volcanic eruption.
