According to a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) official, employers in the private sector have been helpful so far with the recommendation pushing them to provide paid isolation and quarantine leave benefits to workers sick with coronavirus.

In a Laging Handa briefing, Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez remarked, “We have not heard any objections from employers, small or large (establishments).” He was referring to Labor Advisory No. 1, which was announced on January 17.

Benavidez, on the other hand, underlined that such leave benefits are optional.

“It is not necessary to grant quarantine leave. “All we ask is that businesspeople give additional leave benefits for quarantine or isolation, if possible,” he said.

Some employers were already extending extended leave benefits to their employees before the recommendation was issued, according to Benavidez.

“There were callers the day after (the notice was released) asking clarity.” In fact, several employers grant additional leave before issuing an alert so that personnel can continue to be paid while in isolation or quarantine,” he noted.

Workers may seek assistance from the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) if their employers are unable to provide further leave benefits, he noted.

“The ECC helps people with cash, medical reimbursement, and illness benefits. This is for anyone who contracted Covid-19 at work or as a result of their job. “Covid-19 is a work-related illness,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Benavidez said the ECC’s plan to boost cash aid for workers who will contract Covid-19 from PHP10,000 to PHP30,000 is still awaiting clearance from the President’s Office.

For the time being, he said, private-sector workers can apply for EC benefits through the Social Security System (SSS) and government employees can apply through the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
