The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated Friday that the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is displaying symptoms of increased activity.

According to a Phivolcs notice, 18 volcanic earthquakes have been reported in the last 24 hours. Four “extremely shallow tornillo indications” connected with magmatic gas along cracks within the upper volcanic slopes are included in the total.

Since mid-October last year, Phivolcs has noted a slight distortion of the building.

“Shallow hydrothermal processes underlying the edifice are likely to be causing the increased seismic activity and short-term ground deformation,” it continued, “which could trigger phreatic or steam-driven eruptions from the summit crater.”

Movements or eruptions of magma from the volcano create volcanic quakes. Shallow tornillo signals, on the other hand, are low-frequency earthquakes with a tornillo or screw shape.

Last January 16, weak to moderate and low steam-laden plumes exceeding 200 meters in height were seen.

Over the Kanlaon Volcano, Alert Level 1 (abnormal) is maintained.

Due to the possibility of abrupt steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, entry inside the 4-kilometer permanent hazard zone must be tightly banned, according to Phivolcs.

Pilots are also urged to stay away from the summit of the volcano since phreatic eruptions might be dangerous to planes.
