The National Housing Authority (NHA) has released P487 million in shelter help for ‘Odette’ victims.

The government has begun offering emergency shelter support to Typhoon Odette victims who were swept through portions of the Visayas and Mindanao in December.

“Ang NHA (National Housing Authority) ay kasalukuyang nag-i-implement ng emergency shelter assistance, sila ay nakapag-download na sa mga local government units ng PHP487 million,” said Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Apart from the NHA, roughly PHP4.8 billion in funding from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) have been distributed to local government entities for the same reason, according to Jalad (LGUs).

“Mr. President, at mayroong suggestion na ibibigay ang NDRRMC sa inyo para sa karagdagang emergency shelter assistance,” Jalad added.

Meanwhile, Jalad reported that the government had delivered 7.1 million kg of emergency supplies to areas hit hard by the hurricane.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has issued 786,000 family food packs worth PHP440 million to Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga, according to Jalad.

The post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) for typhoon-affected areas is expected to be completed by the end of January, according to Jalad, who is also the administrator of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

He went on to say that the PDNA is now being carried out by 21 teams on 95 local government units that have suffered losses and damage as a result of “Odette.”

These will be presented to the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs), who will then convey them to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) by mid-February, according to Jalad.

“Odette” has affected 2.3 million families or around 8 million people.

Around 406 people were confirmed deceased, with 65 missing and 1,265 injured, with 339,478 people still sheltering in 1,146 evacuation centers and receiving assistance.

The cyclone also caused damage to 1.3 million homes.
