Following a downward trend in reported coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) is set to meet and discuss the possibility of de-escalating Metro Manila from Alert Level 3 to the less stringent Alert Level 2, Malacanang said Tuesday.

Karlo Nograles, Cabinet Secretary and an acting presidential spokesperson said the task team would look into it and make a decision before the end of the month.

The increase in coronavirus cases in Metro Manila may have peaked, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, as the number of new cases from the region continues to decline.

As of January 24, a total of 262,997 patients are recovering from Covid-19, with 72,382 of them in Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, the region’s 1,300 intensive care unit beds for Covid-19 cases are at least 47 percent full, including 46 percent of isolation beds and 50 percent of ward beds.

According to Duque, the healthcare use rate must be kept at a low-risk level, which means less than 50% overall bed utilization and intensive care unit utilization.

The national government is also keeping an eye on the situation with Covid-19 in the Visayas and Mindanao, where cases are on the rise.

The official advised local government units to step up their vaccination campaigns and persuade their constituents to be vaccinated, stressing that vaccine coverage outside of the NCR is still low.
