Three departing Comelec executives have no replacements yet

The appointment of a new Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair and two commissioners have yet to be announced by Malacanang.

Sheriff Abas and Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and Antonio Kho Jr. of the Comelec are due to step down in February, three months before the national and municipal elections on May 9.

“Wala pa pong advice from the Palace (No advice from the Palace yet), but obviously the President understands the importance of appointing the new Comelec commissioners immediately after the end of the term, itong mga (these) present Comelec commissioners at iyong (and the) chair, especially with the upcoming elections,” Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, acting presidential spokesperson, said in a virtual media briefing on Tuesday.

President Rodrigo Duterte understands the necessity of picking replacements to outgoing Comelec officials, according to Nograles.

“However, there has been no word from the President as to kung sino (who), so let’s just wait for the next announcement,” he added.

In 2015, the late President Benigno Aquino III appointed Abas as a commissioner, then in 2017, Duterte appointed him as chair in place of the impeached Andres Bautista.

Guanzon, who oversees the First Division, and Bautista were both appointed by Aquino.

Commissioner Socorro Inting, the most senior of the remaining poll body officials, would serve as acting chair awaiting the appointment of Abas’ replacement, Guanzon tweeted on Monday.
