Qatar will contribute P23 million worth of vaccines to the Philippines.

The Qatari government has pledged USD450,000 (about PHP23 million) to assist the Philippines in obtaining 50,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine, according to the Qatar Embassy in Manila.

“The goal of the support is to offer an additional 50,000 doses of Sinovac anti-Covid-19 vaccination to the people of the Philippines for a cost of USD450,000.” The assistance is part of Qatar’s ongoing effort to expand access to the Covid-19 vaccination, according to a statement.

“This assistance is an extension of Qatar’s commitment to stand with the brotherly and friendly countries affected by the pandemic by providing appropriate medical supplies to deal with the repercussions of Covid-19 and to provide health support to the people of the affected countries,” the statement continued.

Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Malki, Qatar’s ambassador, said the additional assistance “falls within the framework of humanitarian action” and is intended to help the Filipino people who have been impacted severely by the virus.

It also affirms Qatar’s “active involvement and efforts” in combating the pandemic, as well as its position to help “friendly and brotherly countries” like the Philippines overcome the global health crisis, according to Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, director-general of Qatar Fund for Development.

Meanwhile, Amable Aguiluz V, President Rodrigo Duterte’s special envoy to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, expressed the Philippines’ thanks to Doha and the Emir.

“The Philippines is extremely lucky to be featured in Qatar’s friendly countries list. Filipinos, particularly overseas Filipino workers, have received fair treatment and have benefited from the generosity of Qatar’s Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani,” he stated.

“This humanitarian act is a sign of the two countries’ strong diplomatic and amicable relations,” he continued.

On May 5, 2022, Doha and Manila will celebrate 41 years of diplomatic relations.

Al-Malki has previously stated that Qatar would continue to work to strengthen ties between the two countries, particularly in the fields of energy, education, culture, and health.

The four decades of bilateral relations between the two countries, according to the envoy, are a tribute to the “strong friendship” that has developed over time.
