NATO dispatches more ships and fighter jets in response to Russia’s’military build-up.’

As Russia “continues its military build-up in and around Ukraine,” NATO allies are sending extra ships and jets to “boost deterrence and defense” in eastern Europe, the alliance declared on Monday.

“As Russia continues its military build-up in and around Ukraine, NATO Allies are putting forces on standby and sending more ships and fighter jets to NATO deployments in eastern Europe, boosting Allied deterrence and defense,” the union said in a press release.

Spain, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and the United States are among the allies.

According to the statement, a Spanish warship with around 200 sailors set sail for the Black Sea on Saturday and is considering sending fighter jets to Bulgaria, while Denmark has decided to send a frigate to the Baltic Sea and to reinforce NATO’s air policing mission in Lithuania with four F-16 fighters.

France has volunteered to increase NATO soldiers in Bulgaria, while the United States has stated its willingness to send more personnel and equipment to eastern Europe.

The Netherlands is sending two F-35 fighter jets to Bulgaria to participate in a similar mission beginning in April, as well as a ship and land-based forces to NATO’s Response Force.

“NATO will continue to take all necessary steps to protect and defend all Allies, including by reinforcing the eastern half of the Alliance,” Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, welcoming the additional partner soldiers.

“We will always respond to any deterioration in our security environment, including by bolstering our collective defense,” Stoltenberg said, applauding NATO allies’ decision.

The news comes after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Russia’s proposals for European security arrangements call for NATO troops, equipment, and weapons to be removed from Bulgaria and Romania.

NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said in a statement that the alliance would not relinquish its right to self-defense and that the Russian demands were based on the “concept of zones of influence in Europe” and would “create first and second class NATO members.”

The US and UK governments decided to withdraw their ambassadors’ families from Kyiv on Sunday and Monday.

The United States and its European allies have warned that Russia is preparing an invasion of Ukraine by stationing over 100,000 troops along its border with the former Soviet republic, as well as considerable artillery and tank deployments. Moscow has denied planning a military attack, claiming that its soldiers are conducting routine drills there.

Following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO proceeded to beef up its presence in eastern Europe.
