In 2021, key infrastructure projects will be completed or improved: DPWH

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Thursday that critical infrastructure projects were still in the works in 2021, reducing travel time, ensuring motorist safety, and protecting lives and property.

Acting Secretary Roger Mercado of the Department of Public Works and Highways said in a statement that from January to December 2021, they accomplished the construction, renovation, and improvement of 4,097 kilometers of roads, 510 bridges, and 1,593 flood control structures.

Priority infrastructure projects created 1.6 million employment, he claimed.

The Department of Public Works also assisted in the construction of 4,244 classrooms, 82 school workshop buildings, and other educational facilities.

A total of 108 evacuation centers have been completed across the country.

“Despite the looming threat of a pandemic, DPWH has achieved significant milestones in our commitment to offering quality infrastructure to the Filipino people,” Mercado continued.

He claimed that President Rodrigo R. Duterte had become the country’s “Infrastructure President,” having completed the building, renovation, and improvement of 34,291 kilometers of roads, 6,656 bridges, and 13,224 flood control structures between June 2016 and December 2021.

Aside from infrastructure development, the DPWH is also helping the government fight the coronavirus epidemic in 2019.

By the end of December, it had constructed 736 quarantine facilities with 28,195 beds for the treatment of infected people, 29 modular hospitals with 595 beds, and 55 off-site dormitories for health professionals with 1,444 beds.

Meanwhile, DPWH Regional Operations Undersecretary Rafael C. Yabut said the agency is looking forward to a year full of challenges, chances, and victories in 2022.

“With the humble desire to be of service and lend a helping hand even in trying times, DPWH men and women have proven their willingness to face any risk in the name of fulfilling duties and serving the public in the aftermath of disasters like Typhoon Odette in December 2021 and Taal Volcano eruption in January 2020,” he said.
