The US administration anticipates a “strong and constructive” relationship with the next Philippine president, who will be elected in May, according to the US Embassy in Manila.

Heather Variava, the US Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, expressed optimism that the two countries’ ties will stay strong based on their long-standing and broad cooperation during a media roundtable.

She stated that the US government respects and supports the Philippine democratic process and that they look forward to working with whoever the Filipino people choose.

“I believe our people have such strong bonds, and I believe that regardless of who is elected in May, we look forward to having a strong and productive relationship with the new president, and we look forward to continuing that strong partnership and supporting Philippine rights and sovereignty in the region,” she said.

Security, trade, development, and cultural and educational exchanges are just a few of the areas where the two countries could collaborate further, according to Variava.

“We celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty last year, and we continue to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our bilateral diplomatic relationship,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, she mentioned Washington, D.C.’s interest in participating in election observation activities hosted by the Commission on Elections.

“It’s possible that observers from the United States will join as well. We don’t have specifics yet, but we’ve received questions from some of the biggest organizations about coming to observe, and we’re happy to work with Comelec to participate in whatever program is offered “she stated
