The Philippines and the United States Marine Corps have begun a week-long joint drill.

The Marine Exercise 2022 Philippines (MAREX 22 PH) between the Philippines and the United States began on Thursday, with the goal of improving both sides’ capabilities.

MAREX 22 PH is a bilateral exercise involving the Philippine and US Marine Forces that intends to improve the two services’ ability to conduct amphibious operations in support of counter-terrorism, internal security operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief (HADR).

“From January 27 to February 2, it will hold simultaneous amphibious operation activities in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Command (Wescom) in Palawan and the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) combined areas of operation,” said Maj. Emery Torres, PMC public affairs office chief.

The drills kicked off with a keynote address from Philippine Marine Corps Commandant Maj. Gen. Ariel R. Caculitan at the Philippine Marine Corps headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

All amphibious planning and execution will take place in Wescom, while all HADR and medical training exercises will take place in Westmincom, with cooperation from the Tawi-Tawi provincial administration.

Caculitan expressed his gratitude for the US Marine Corps’ participation and emphasized the need for training to better equip Marines with skills and knowledge and to make the Marine Corps smarter.

“We must continue to perform relevant training in order to enhance our individual and collective capacities.” The United States Marine Corps, our foreign counterpart and important ally, has long been training with us and sharing the responsibility of maintaining regional peace and security with us,” Caculitan stated.

Meanwhile, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s commanding commander, Col. James Lively, said the goal is to “effectively integrate our troops during planning and execution to undertake a full-scale expeditionary amphibious operation, side-by-side with our Filipino partners.”

“Marine Exercise 2022 Philippines will reinforce our commitment to the Indo-Pacific area while also providing a remarkable experience for our Marines and sailors,” he added.
