For the Covid-19 response, the Philippines receives P48.7 million in Australian funding.

Through the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) Philippines, the Philippines received PHP48.7 million worth of cold chain equipment and other aid from the Australian government on Friday.

The Australian government has offered technical, logistical, and in-kind assistance to the Philippines throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic, according to DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III.

During the ceremonial transfer of the items at the Goetz Cargo Center in Paranaque City, Duque said, “These are life-saving equipment, indeed vital in our pandemic response, as well as other supplies and consumables, which have already arrived last year.”

30 solar-powered vaccine refrigerators, eight walk-in cold rooms with generators, 106 spare parts, and 20 sets of personal protective equipment were delivered to the Philippines.

Rural health centers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Area in Muslim Mindanao and the Davao region would each receive a solar-powered vaccination refrigerator, according to UNICEF Representative to the Philippines Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov.

Other places that would benefit from the equipment include the Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen, and Caraga.

“This relationship is noteworthy for our shared commitment to strengthening the national health system and ensuring that health services, such as Covid-19 and routine immunization, reach Filipino families,” Dendevnorov added.

The investment would help the Philippines speed up the Covid-19 vaccination program in distant areas by providing cold storage facilities that can keep huge amounts of vaccines, according to Australian Ambassador Steven Robinson.

“It will assist ensure that the most vulnerable parts of the population have equal access to immunizations,” Robinson added.

He went on to say that the Australian government is committed to helping the Philippines improve its cold chain capacity, information management, and vaccine supply of Covid-19.

Unicef Health Section Chief Dr. Malalay Ahmadzai, DOH Undersecretary Ma. Carolina Taio, vaccination specialist Dr. Carla Orozco, cold chain officer Benme Bersola, and DOH Undersecretary Ma. Carolina Taio also attended.
