Ensure that ‘sabong’ operations adhere to health regulations: DILG

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged all local government units (LGUs) to guarantee that the revival of traditional “sabong” (cockfighting) in regions under Alert Level 2 or lower would not be super spreader events of Covid-19 and its highly transmissible Omicron form.

According to DILG Secretary Eduardo Ao, governors, mayors, and village heads must apply good judgment, take required actions, and ensure compliance with health and safety norms in the administration of cockpits and cockfighting activities.

“Kahit nasa Level 2 or 1 na kayo, mahigpit pa rin nating paalala na maging maingat, disiplinado, at alisto sa inyong pagbabalik-operasyon ng sabong sa inyong pagbabalik-operasyon ng sabong sa inyong pagbabalik-operasy Even if we are already at Level 2 or 1, cockfighting operations should be conducted with discipline and attention. The Omicron threat is still present, so it is not yet time to relax),” Ao noted in a news statement on Saturday.

The operation of cockpits and traditional cockfighting under Alert Level 2 or lower is permitted under DILG Memorandum Circular 2022-003, provided there is no opposition from the concerned LGU and coronavirus disease 2019 health protocols are properly followed.

According to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging and Infectious Diseases, the maximum venue capacity for indoor meetings is 50% – all fully vaccinated.

The establishment’s workers and staff should likewise be adequately vaccinated.

To avoid the physical exchange of currency anywhere in the cockpit, only technology-based systems and cashless betting are permitted.

Proper mask wear, stringent enforcement of the “no mask, no entry” policy, physical separation of at least one meter, and the provision of alcohol/hand sanitizer/disinfecting supplies for consumers, personnel, and visitors are all minimum public health regulations.

“We aren’t out of the woods yet, and we don’t promote big gatherings that may spread the word like wildfire.” Before entering a cockpit or participating in cockfighting activities, be particularly cautious,” Ao said.

The monitoring and inspection of cockpit arenas will be assisted by local police personnel.

He cautioned that if the criteria were not followed, the cockpits would be shut down automatically, and concerned officials and staff would be prosecuted.
