The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported eight “extremely faint” phreatomagmatic bursts in the Taal Volcano on Saturday.

These phreatomagmatic explosions from the main crater occurred between 1:18 p.m. and 9:57 p.m., lasting 10 seconds to two minutes, according to Phivolcs.

According to Phivolcs, phreatomagmatic eruptions were caused by the interaction of magma and water and were accompanied by different infrasound signals.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs recorded steam-rich plumes ranging in height from 400 to 900 meters.

The average sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux since the start of 2022 is 10,668 tons per day, with the largest emission of 18,705 tons on January 27.

Despite the substantial SO2 emissions, Phivolcs noted that the Taal Volcano has had nearly no volcanic earthquakes since December 19, 2021.

The Taal Volcano is still under alert level 2 (increasing unrest). This means that gas-driven explosions and fatal gas accumulations or expulsions threaten the Taal Volcano Island and its environs (TVI).

TVI, the area around the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, as well as activities on Taal Lake, must all be tightly restricted, according to Phivolcs.

In the event of further instability, local government officials are also recommended to examine and reinforce the preparation of previously evacuated barangays.
