A National Center for Geriatric Health and Research Institute (NCGHRI) will be established soon to ensure that all elderly adults across the country have access to comprehensive health care.

During the House of Representatives plenary session on Monday, a total of 201 parliamentarians voted in support of House Bill 10697, which would create dedicated medical facilities and geriatric specialty centers throughout the country.

The NCGHRI would be required to construct, run, equip, and maintain an integrated medical institution specializing in geriatric health services, according to House Committee on Health Chairperson Angelina Tan.

Geriatrics is a specialty of medicine that focuses on the prevention and treatment of diseases and disabilities in the aged population.

The bill’s sponsor, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, claims that specialized geriatric care will reduce the average length of hospital stay among elderly patients from 7.3 to 6.7 days, reduce hospital costs to roughly PHP50,000 per patient, and improve senior people’ overall treatment.

A hospital specializing in elderly care, according to Velasco, can assist address the Philippines’ chronic shortage of geriatricians by serving as a teaching ground for doctors interested in pursuing a career in geriatric medicine.

It will also help to promote geriatric health as a legitimate subject of study, as well as encourage new and aspiring doctors to pursue careers as geriatricians.

“This bill aims to make the country’s commitment to universal health care more authentically felt by the aged population, and to provide our nearly 10 million senior citizens with the quality healthcare they deserve,” he stated.

The measure calls for all income earned by the NCGHRI’s operations to be retained in order to supplement the hospital’s maintenance and other operating expenses, as well as capital outlay requirements.

It also exempts all cash or in-kind donations, contributions, grants, bequests, or gifts received by the NCGHRI from income, donor, and other taxes.
