WHO classifies a new viral strain from southern Africa as a “variant of concern.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) called the new Covid-19 variation from southern Africa Omicron and classified it a “variant of concern” on Friday.
The announcement came after the Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution, an independent group of experts, met to analyze the variation known as B.1.1.529 at the time.
According to the WHO, the “variant of concern” has a large number of mutations, is more transmissible, and maybe more proficient at eluding public health efforts such as immunizations.
South Africa was the first country to report the new type to the WHO on Wednesday, and it has since been discovered in Botswana, Hong Kong, and Belgium.
“Preliminary research suggests that this variant has a higher risk of reinfection than other Variants of Concern,” the UN health agency stated, urging people to take actions to decrease their risk of contracting Covid-19.
Wearing face masks, keeping hand cleanliness, physical distance, boosting interior ventilation, avoiding crowded settings, and being vaccinated are all examples.
Many countries, including Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union member states, have imposed travel restrictions on travelers from southern Africa.
