The US contributes an additional P51.1 million in logistics help to the ‘Odette’-affected districts.

The US government is giving an additional PHP51.1 million through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to help convey humanitarian goods to communities affected by Typhoon Odette.

According to the US Embassy in Manila, this new help takes the overall amount of US support to more than PHP1.08 billion.

“We will continue to support the Philippines in its post-typhoon rehabilitation as friends, partners, and allies,” US Embassy Chargรฉ d’Affaires ad interim Heather Variava stated. “This additional aid will aid in the delivery of food and other necessities to areas affected by the hurricane.”

USAID and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will deploy an additional 300 vehicles in conjunction with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) to transport food and other supplies to typhoon-affected communities.

This collaboration will also help OCD transport humanitarian materials to far-flung communities and barangays.

At a virtual UN briefing on February 2, Sarah Charles, assistant to the administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, revealed the new funding.

It expands on the US government’s announcement last December of PHP1 billion in aid to typhoon-affected areas for food, water, sanitation, and hygiene programs, shelter assistance, and logistics support.

According to the Embassy, as of January 28, USAID and the World Food Programme (WFP) had already provided over 300 vehicles to distribute over 350,000 household food rations, as well as hygiene kits, kitchen sets, and shelter kits to areas affected by Typhoon Odette.

Through its partners, USAID has also assisted in the management of evacuation shelters, deployed mobile operations vehicles to support emergency telecommunications, and provided 4,800 households with heavy-duty plastic sheeting to satisfy their shelter needs.

The US will continue to work with the Philippines to respond to natural catastrophes and assist Filipinos in their recovery efforts, according to the Embassy.
