The Canadian government is sending 837,000 respirator face masks to the Department of Health (DOH) for PHP136 million in support of health care workers fighting the coronavirus outbreak.

The first batch of 442,000 masks was delivered to the DOH offices in Manila on Friday by Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Peter MacArthur.

Canada also handed around 120,000 N95 masks to the DOH in September 2020.

“Canada is working closely with the Philippine government and regional allies to combat Covid-19,” he said during the handover, according to a statement from the Canadian embassy.

“Our partnership involves close interaction with ASEAN and its member states to assist a coordinated and multilateral approach targeted at reducing and terminating the pandemic,” he added.

To combat biological risks, the masks were provided through a collaboration between the Canadian government, the Asean Secretariat, and Asean member states.

Since 2013, these parties have been collaborating in the region to improve biological security, biological safety, and disease surveillance capacities.

“To tackle the Covid epidemic, Canada has contributed further support to Asean partners, building on our long-standing collaboration.” This involves donating 9.5 million sets of personal protective equipment and non-medical masks to the Asean Secretariat and seven member states, including the Philippines’ 837,000 masks,” MacArthur added.
