The system’s alarm level should be gradually increased: DTI

As the country shifts from a pandemic to an endemic mindset, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced on Monday that the alert level system should be gradually lifted.

DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo stated during the Laging Handa public briefing that Filipinos should be used to the fact that, even if alert levels are reduced, minimum public health requirements should still be followed.

“Reducing the alert levels does not mean we are no longer dealing with the Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) issue,” Castelo stated in Filipino.

The Department of Transportation (DTI) has issued a statement urging companies in regions under Alert Level 2 to closely observe health regulations to avoid another surge and a more stringent restriction.

DTI, according to Castelo, would continue to perform on-the-spot monitoring in Metro Manila businesses such as hairdressers, movies, recreational venues, restaurants, and gyms to ensure that they adhere to the minimal public health standard.

Senatorial aspirant Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro said in a separate statement Monday that it is not yet time to abolish the country’s alert level system.

As the country shifts to an endemic mindset, Teodoro believes the government should first design an inclusive “exit plan” from the epidemic, involving many sectors and local government units (LGUs) in identifying steps.

In the current situation, he said, the alert level system is still operational, and the state of provinces and regions is determined by the number of Covid-19 cases and the health-care capacity of local governments.

“With a large portion of our economy currently open, our present alert level system, particularly Levels 1 and 2, is no longer limiting.” Another spike is unaffordable, especially for local governments with limited healthcare resources. It isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. He went on to say, “We need to assure immunization equality and strengthen health facilities across the country.”
