Syringes for the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine are expected to arrive on December 2nd, according to a DOH executive.

According to the National Vaccine Operations Center (NVOC) and Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje on Wednesday, syringes for the Pfizer coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine procured by the government through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will begin arriving in tranches on Thursday.

Cabotaje said in a Laging Handa briefing that this is part of the 44 million syringes ordered three months earlier.

Due to a shortage of Pfizer syringes, the government had to lower its immunization objective for the three-day “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” nationwide Covid-19 vaccination program from Monday to Wednesday from 15 million to 9 million doses.

According to Cabotaje, these syringes were meant to be sent in two batches, the first of which was 2 million on November 22 and the second of which was 2 million on November 29, but did not come due to a global lack of ancillary supplies.

However, Cabotaje stated that the Philippines only has a shortage of Pfizer syringes, while all other manufacturers’ supplies are readily available at immunization clinics.

With this outcome, Cabotaje pledged to strengthen vaccination operations in preparation for the second stage of the big “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” drive, which will take place from December 15 to 17, with the goal of achieving population protection by the end of the month.

Part of this goal, according to Cabotaje, is to allow more walk-in vaccinees to receive their Covid-19 doses.

“No walk-ins should be sent home without being vaccinated,” Cabotaje added, repeating President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to accommodate everyone who wants to get Covid-19 immunizations at inoculation sites.

Cabotaje previously stated that the major vaccination drive received an overwhelming response on the first day, resulting in the non-accommodation of walk-in vaccines in some vaccination sites.

She further stated that several local government units lacked the capacity to handle pediatric vaccinations and that vaccination accomplishment reports were submitted late due to the vaccinators’ attention on the enormous inoculation activities.
