The US has pledged to assist in PH control and the reversal of the AIDS epidemic: the executive

The US government has pledged to continue assisting Manila in its attempts to contain and eventually reverse the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, which currently affects over 100,000 Filipinos.

In a forum, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Philippines Acting Mission Director Sean Callahan said, “Building on the US government’s strong and enduring partnership with the Philippines over the past 75 years, the US is proud to support the Philippines’ objective in delivering quality people-centered HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) prevention and treatment services, and strengthening efforts to control and eventually reverse the HIV epidemic.”

Through a PHP875 million program initiated early this year under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, USAID is collaborating closely with the Department of Health (DOH) and other partners (PEPFAR).

The United States is supporting this program by distributing HIV prevention medications, often known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP), to people who are at risk of contracting the infection.

It also aids Manila in expanding its case-finding efforts and promoting ethical and stigma-free counseling and testing for HIV-positive people.

“We know that eradicating HIV in the Philippines will be a difficult task. We remain dedicated to standing alongside the Philippine government, civil society organizations, and the people on their path to epidemic control as an everlasting friend, partner, and ally “According to Callahan.

Beverly Ho, director of the DOH’s Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, reaffirmed the DOH’s commitment to tackle AIDS-related concerns despite the pandemic’s hurdles.

According to Ho, the Philippines had at least 22 HIV infections per day last year, which was fewer than pre-pandemic numbers of 36 cases per day, presumably due to a lack of access to tests due to coronavirus limitations.

According to the most recent UNAIDS data, 120,000 adults and children in the Philippines are living with HIV.

“The Department of Health remains committed to tackling HIV and AIDS challenges, as well as the linked difficulties that we encounter more frequently in patients with these diagnoses,” Ho stated.
