The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is urging ‘illegal’ radio stations to comply with regulations.

Operators of unauthorized FM radio stations in Negros Oriental have been warned by a senior official of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in Region 7 to comply with government standards or face punishment.

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday, lawyer Alan Felix Macaraya of NTC-7’s legal division said four of the 16 illegal operators had already been called for mediation proceedings.

In January 2022, the rest of the illegal radio station operators would be summoned for mediation to present their case, he said.

“Actually, the mediation is aimed at preventing the illegal functioning of radio stations that are not registered or do not have a congressional franchise,” Macaraya explained.

He went on to say that now is the best time to “settle or clear everything from our office, otherwise we will be obliged to close your stations.”

Macaraya stated that the NTC will be impartial and accommodating to all parties involved, giving these illegitimate operators a chance to settle their debts.

With election season approaching, he confessed that the NTC anticipates that more people would be lured to start their own radio stations to promote their political candidates.

He claims that many people are protesting about unlawful stations that occasionally broadcast shows with “libelous” content against specific individuals.

“We are doing this equitably,” Macaraya said of their fight against unlawful radio stations, which will “apply to all.”

In the lack of a franchise or license, these illegal radio stations should cease operations immediately, he said, “but we will allow them adequate time to comply with the standards.”
