WHO reports cases of Omicron variant in 23 countries.

According to the WHO chief, at least 23 nations from five of the six WHO regions have reported instances of the new Omicron strain of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), and the number is projected to rise.

At a press webinar on the Covid-19 pandemic, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus noted, “The discovery of the Omicron strain has rightly caught global concern.”

“WHO, and every country, should take this development very seriously.” It should, however, not come as a surprise to us. “Viruses do this,” he explained.

He believes the Omicron virus, which was first reported on Friday, would continue to evolve if the world permits it to do so.

“We’re learning more about Omicron all the time,” Tedros said, “but there’s still more to understand about its effect on disease transmission, severity, and the effectiveness of testing, therapies, and immunizations.”

He stated that the world must remember that it is already dealing with a highly transmissible and lethal version known as the Delta, which accounts for nearly all cases worldwide.

“To prevent Delta transfer and save lives, we must employ the instruments we already have.” And if we do that, we’ll be able to avoid Omicron transmission and save lives,” he continued.

He cautioned that if countries and individuals do not take the necessary steps to stop the Delta strain from spreading, “they will not be able to halt Omicron either.”

In recent days, many WHO advisory groups convened to examine emerging evidence and prioritize studies needed to answer these issues.

Botswana and South Africa were commended again by the WHO chief for quickly discovering, sequencing, and reporting this variation.

“It concerns me greatly that those countries are now being punished by others for doing the right thing,” he said, echoing a previous statement.

Tedros urged all governments to take reasonable and proportional risk-reduction measures in accordance with international health regulations.

“This includes measures such as passenger screening prior to departure and upon arrival, as well as the imposition of quarantine on international travelers, to delay or reduce the spread of the new type.”

He stated that blanket travel prohibitions would not stop Omicron from spreading over the world, and that they would put a huge burden on people’s lives and businesses.
