After-school development programs

As a child matures into an adult, he must develop several aspects of his physical, emotional, and mental selves. Recognize the child’s developmental needs and abilities in order to help him realize his greatest potential. After-school programs should assist children with activities they must do at each stage of development in order to be effective.

The growth curve of a child can be divided into three parts:
1) A small child (ages 3-5)
2) Secondary school (ages 6-8)
3) Older students (ages 9-12)

The Physical Domain, the Social Domain, the Emotional Domain, and the Intellectual Domain are the four major realms of development. During the various stages of a child’s development, each of these domains must be addressed independently. After-school programs should focus on developing each area according to the child’s age. Even if the children in these programs may have comparable developmental needs and ages, don’t expect them to develop in the same way. Children develop at their own pace and when they are ready.

Physical Domain: Children want to improve talents that they have recently learned to manage while they are young. They enjoy a range of movements including jumping, catching, and throwing. Middle schoolers, on the other hand, desire to master more advanced abilities and participate in team sports. This is also an excellent time to learn about sports regulations and discipline. The older school child is ready for more adult-like activities, such as dancing, gymnastics, and music lessons, which require more organization and discipline.

Social Domain: Young children observe others and are drawn to activities in which they take on the roles of family members. They form short-term friendships and require the assurance of an adult. The middle school student is fascinated by society and will like field trips to factories, government buildings, and other places. They’re curious about the “how” and “why” of things. The elder student is ready to study various countries, foods, and customs. They also wish to conduct some volunteer work.

Intellectual Domain: Students in elementary school will put what they’ve learned into practice. Middle school students are eager to learn new abilities and are enthusiastic about reading, theatre, and problem-solving. The older students are ready to investigate and research. They appreciate receiving puzzles and deliberating over them.

Any after-school activity should cater to the interests of the child based on the group to which he belongs. Knowing and understanding the needs and interests of the children in your program will assist staff in planning and structuring programs that are most beneficial to that group.
