The Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has urged businesses to tap into the ‘halal’ industry.

Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Ramon Lopez has urged firms, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to investigate the “halal” sector.

Lopez said the halal business might improve Philippine exports as the global halal economy develops, during the 4th Philippine National Halal Conference on Thursday.

“The halal business will contribute more exports, more to our export campaigns,” he said, “since this is a game-changer and a new section for our export market.”

As the country recovers from the epidemic, the commerce and industry secretary said his agency will continue to implement the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016, which will help firms produce and market halal goods and gain a piece of the global halal market.

“Through our Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Program is committed to providing capability-building programs for food and non-food MSME exporters to equip them with the right information when it comes to halal requirements, standards, processes, and regulations,” Lopez explained.

More than 400 MSMEs and exporters, as well as more than ten halal certification bodies, have benefited and been trained as a result of the program’s ten training modules.

“We, at the DTI, have been advocating for a more inclusive approach to improve the halal industry.” “The official launch of the PH Halal App will strengthen our country’s readiness to supply halal-certified products and services, as well as provide an easy access guide for halal establishments and products,” he said, adding that the app will also assist Muslim tourists visiting the Philippines in finding mosques and halal-certified restaurants.

The DTI’s other halal-related initiatives include including halal food in its FOOD Philippines branding and increasing the quantity of halal-certified items.

“In the future, we hope to develop a Philippine Halal Development plan that is guided by the ultimate goal of developing an organized, structured, and recognized Philippine halal ecosystem in the global halal economy,” Lopez added.
