NTF is looking at the possibility of extending the shelf life of an expired Covid-19 vaccine.

Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., head of the National Task Force (NTF) Against Covid-19, said Thursday that the government, in collaboration with vaccine makers, is reevaluating all coronavirus vaccines that have previously expired or are about to expire for possible shelf-life extensions.

Galvez stated in an interview that the NTF and the Department of Health (DOH) are doing all possible to ensure that no coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines are wasted due to expiration.

Due to a global lack of vaccine supplies, the government was previously forced to take vaccines with an expiration date of one to two months, according to the vaccine czar.

Galvez, on the other hand, said the government is in talks with a number of pharmaceutical companies as well as the COVAX Facility to offer the country vaccines with a four-month or longer shelf life.

“Don’t worry,” he continued, “we will always ensure that na yung tinuturok natin (the vaccination we administer) is very safe and within the shelf-life that has been approved by the makers as well as the regulatory authority.” “We’ll make sure that vaccines that are about to expire are quarantined for reevaluation.”

Galvez gave an example, saying that following a series of examinations, the shelf-life of around 1.2 million Pfizer vaccinations delivered last October and slated to expire in November was extended until February next year.

“It can be extended yung shelf-life based doon sa kanilang evaluation (It may be extended yung shelf-life based on their evaluation),” he remarked.

Other countries, according to Galvez, are following suit.

“They’re evaluating the vials,” he added, “and they’ve determined that it’s still safe to use.”

In a separate interview, DOH Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje stated that no reports of “mishandled” coronavirus vaccinations have been received.

“Ni-request natin iyong ating mga probinsiya, mga munisipyo na magdala ng outdated vaccine as of November 30 sa ating mga regional offices para i-quarantine iyan, tapos titingnan natin baka puwede pang magamit, aaralin iyong shelf life (We have requested that our provinces and We’ll see if they’re still usable. Cabotaje, who also chairs the National Vaccine Operations Center, added, “We will evaluate their shelf-life)” (NVOC).

She stated that the amounts of AstraZeneca vaccines that expired on Tuesday were still being finalized.

“We’ll see what we can do with the immunizations that aren’t due to expire until November 30.” “AstraZeneca is primarily responsible,” she added.

Some vaccinations in the stockpile are also set to expire this month and in January of next year, according to Cabotaje.

“Gagawin natin lahat silang first doses,” says the narrator. Idi-distribute natin in high-consumption regions, and then ide-deploy natin nang mas kakaunti sa mas maraming lugar para ito ay mai-jab (All of these will be used as first doses.) We’ll distribute them to high-consumption areas and expand their deployment to other locations so they can be managed),” she said.

The World Health Organization has already stated that the short shelf-life of Covid-19 vaccinations has caused problems in numerous countries.
